Forget it, Katie. It's Chinatown

I purchased this rainbow tulle skirt from J. Crew in the spring of 2020 right in the midst of the lock down. It was definitely not a practical purchase for the time, considering the fact that nobody could go anywhere then. Even if one wasn't in the midst of a lock down, a rainbow tulle skirt is not exactly an item of clothing that can be worn all the time. However, nearly two years later, I finally found an occasion to wear it. Perhaps I should say that I finally created an occasion to wear it! Last weekend, we went to Chinatown in Los Angeles and I thought this skirt was a perfect match for this fun building that is in the heart of the central plaza of Chinatown. I was definitely very dressed up for a stroll around Chinatown and for the burgers we got for lunch but I dressed the look down (if that's possible) with a love tee and a pair of sneakers, although the sneakers do have glitter on them!

There were a lot of people in Chinatown because this was the weekend before Lunar New Year. Chinatown has definitely gone through some changes since I first visited the area when I was in college. Now you can find a variety of restaurants, stores and art galleries in the area. As I mentioned, we chose to eat at a new burger place that is in the neighborhood, which was delicious! When we came back from our adventure, we decided to watch the film Chinatown, which really isn't about Chinatown and doesn't take place in Chinatown until the final scene but it was fun to have a day devoted to Chinatown, rainbow tulle and yummy burgers! They say nothing good happens in Chinatown but clearly that's not the case!

Glitter Everywhere!

Sometimes there's a funny story to go along with the photos you see here on my blog and when that's the case, I love to share them with you! Last weekend, I wore this glitter tulle skirt out for the first time. You might notice that I paired it with shoes with glitter heels, some glittery sunglasses, and a pair of gold glitter earrings. Basically, I was in head to to toe glitter! Well, when I got up out of the car, the glitter wasn't just on me but it was also all over the seat and footwell of the car! (It looked like a glitter bomb went off!) Needless to say, my husband was a little less than thrilled about having to vacuum all of this glitter out of the car but it did add a little something extra to the car's interior, in my opinion!

I wore this skirt to go furniture shopping in Pasadena and the sales associate encouraged me to sit on a sofa to try out how comfortable it was. Well, luckily for her, I refrained from doing so because I didn't want to leave an embarrassing glittery mess all of the sofa! I did notice that there were little tiny specs of glitter on the showroom floor like a trail of glitter from where I had walked! Luckily, everyone, including the sales associate, loved the skirt, which is more than I can say for my husband after making a glittery mess in the car!

Be a Work of Art

Last weekend, my husband and I went to see a play and I thought I would get a little dressed up by donning a tulle skirt and this new colorful top from Nordstrom. As it turns out, most people don't get very dressed up these days to go to the theater but I was happy to look a little special in tulle for the occasion. Dressing up a little was especially important to me because the play we saw was The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde and, as you may know, Oscar Wilde was a big fan of dressing flamboyantly and looking like a dandy. Those are two things that I can most certainly get behind! Well, I guess you could say I was paying homage to Wilde though my wardrobe, which seemed extravagant compared to what most others were wearing at the theater!

Tulle is definitely not something I would wear on a regular basis but it's fun for special occasions, weekends, or seeing plays by Oscar Wilde! This tulle skirt always makes me feel like a ballerina in one of Edgar Degas' paintings, especially because, in many of his paintings, the dancers' tutus had sort of a greenish tint like the skirt I am wearing in this post. So, between trying to be a "work of art" though my colorful ensemble and enjoying the art of Oscar Wilde, it was a terrific day with a lot of aesthetic appeal!

Purple Rainbow

Sometimes it's dangerous to go into Anthropologie, especially when they are having a sale! Last weekend, was one of those times! I was doing some Christmas shopping and I thought I would just quickly pop into Anthropologie to check out their sale. There was nothing in particular that I was looking for, but I found a few treasures in the sale section, including this tulle skirt from one of my favorite designers, Eva Franco.

Even though I don't need another tulle skirt, there was just something about this one that I really loved. That same day at Anthropologie, I also got a great denim jacket that will be making its debut on my blog later this week! So, perhaps you are wondering: did I get some gifts for other people? Well, not at Anthropologie, no, but I did at other stores. Truthfully, I feel that most people probably end up getting a little something (or more!) for themselves while doing holiday shopping, so I don't feel too guilty, especially when stores like Anthropologie are having fantastic sales this time of the year!

Last of all, I am back at one of my favorite walls, which is located on the side of an apartment building in North Hollywood. It feels good to infuse a dose of color back into my posts! During the holiday season, I tend to be clad in more muted colors and, of course, red. This post, however, is full of color! Since purple is my favorite color, this wall is one of my favorites in the L.A. area. I know I keep putting it off, but I do intend to post my "wall guide" to Los Angeles at some point, perhaps next week when I am on Christmas break!

Stars and the City

My husband probably doesn't want me to disclose the fact that he was actually the one who got me hooked on the show Sex in the City, but it's true! Maybe it was the clothes or the astute observations on relationships, or that it's essentially a love letter to New York City (where I was living at the time), but I became addicted to the show once my husband, then boyfriend, suggested I watch it. I'm talking about Sex in the City today because two reoccurring motifs from the show can be found in today's outfits: tulle skirts and Chinese food.

First, the skirt is a pretty obvious nod to Carrie's penchant for tulle ballerina style skirts. Although I love this skirt, my husband told me he didn't much care for it, to which I retorted "It's fabulous and you know it!" much like what Carrie told Burger after he insulted her hat. I say this a lot to my husband about my clothes or accessories. Just like many of the men on the show, my husband doesn't seem to "get" certain things about women's fashion.

Secondly, I brought up Chinese food because we ate at one of our favorite Chinese restaurants the day I wore this. Yes, it's a little dressy for such casual dining, but I am never one to shy away from being overdressed and "fabulous" for the occasion. For those of you who are also fans of Sex in the City, Chinese food seems to somehow work its way into the plot of many episodes, be it Carrie having a tantrum over Big taking her to a dimly lit Chinese restaurant because she thinks he is embarrassed to be seen with her in public or the episode where Miranda becomes self conscious when the woman on the phone laughs at her for ordering the same menu items for takeout every night.

Well, as you can see, I'm definitely a Sex in the City aficionado and because my husband is too, we also have a lot of inside jokes about the series. All joking aside, however, the one of the thing that amazes me is that the wardrobe for that show still looks impeccably fresh and modern, even though it premiered nearly twenty years ago.  (Fresher, perhaps than greasy Chinese food, but equally satisfying!)
