Rainbow Maxi Skirt in Palm Springs

 

No trip to Palm Springs would be complete without a stop at the Saguaro Hotel, which is quite literally a rainbow! So, as you can imagine, this was the perfect place to wear this rainbow maxi skirt because it's a perfect match with the rainbow facade of this building! Although this rainbow skirt was purchased a couple years ago, New York & Company still has it in stock in some sizes and it's now on sale! We went to Palm Springs a few weeks ago at the very beginning of April and it was already, very, very hot! I always try to squeeze in a trip there in the spring because by summer the heat is just unbearable! Not being accustomed to the extreme heat at this early point in the season, I kind of felt like I was going to melt while taking these pictures! (My husband, who took the pictures, was also feeling the heat when he was in the sun!) Sometimes we might make a brief trip to Palm Springs in the summer but the temperatures often soar to well above 120 degrees, so unless there is something we really want to see or do, it's really just best to wait until fall. The one good thing about visiting during the summer is you pretty much have the city all to yourself that time of year.

Quintessentially Palm Springs

 

We went to Palm Springs for a short day trip last week. Palm Springs tends to get crowded in April around spring break and Coachella, so the month of March is the perfect time to beat the crowds and to also enjoy weather that is not nearly as hot as the scorchers they have during the summer! Because Palm Springs is a paradise of gorgeous and colorful, not to mention "Instagramable", locations, I always try to hit a couple cool places for blog photos or Instagram pics. On this most recent trip, the Trixie Motel was on the top of my list of places to check out. As you can see, it's definitely a pink lover's paradise! I thought this Trina Turk top, which screams Palm Springs, would be the perfect thing to wear to this pretty pink location and also while walking around Palm Springs!

 

The Trixie Motel is definitely quintessentially Palm Springs in its aesthetic, much like my top! The motel hasn't open yet, but I have already seen numerous photos of it on Instagram, so clearly they are getting a lot of hype due to the gorgeous design of these doors and the abundance of pink! (Who can resist pink?) This motel would definitely be a place I would love to stay if we ever did more than just a day trip to the Palm Springs area! Maybe next time?

Colorful Caftan

 

Last spring, I was gifted this gorgeous, colorful caftan from Frances Valentine. This is actually my first caftan and I was drawn to it because of the colorful embroidery. I first wore it on a day trip to Palm Springs and you might have seen some of my photos from this trip on my Instagram. It was the perfect frock to wear amidst the backdrop of the desert, palm trees and mid-century modern houses! In fact, I felt like I could have moved right in to one of those houses and fit right in! I decided to wear this dress again to go out to dinner last weekend. The restaurant we went to was a French restaurant and we dined al fresco. One of the interesting things about our dinner was that, due to the wildfires we currently have here in California, it was raining ash on our table while we were eating! (Just one of the many perks of living in California, I guess!) Despite the hot weather and the ash, it was still a wonderful dinner! Also, even though this dress is made out of rather thick material, it was still pretty cool and comfortable. I look forward to, hopefully, wearing this caftan again in Palm Springs where it's even hotter than it is here in Los Angeles!

Palm Springs Popsicles

 

Palm Springs is one of my favorite places to go for a quick vacation or day trip due to its proximity to Los Angeles. In my opinion, traveling to Palm Springs in the summer is both the best and worst time to go! It's the best time because it's not very crowded, as the streets are literally empty, but it's the worst time because of the unbearable heat! (The obvious reason for why the streets are empty!) A couple weeks ago, we braved the heat on a day that was a "cool" day for Palm Springs at 106 degrees! Luckily, I planned for the heat and wore this comfy and cool red dress from Target. Truth be told, I also wore this dress because I thought it would match these fun, colorful and very cool popsicles! Below, you will find some other cool and comfy red dresses that would be perfect for a Palm Springs getaway!

 

 

The other great thing about Palm Springs is that there's a wonderful art scene! On this occasion, we checked out these popsicles in the Sunny Dunes area of Palm Springs. This popsicle installation was commissioned through a grant to promote art and to help local artists in the area who are struggling due to the pandemic. In addition to checking out this installation, we also went to the Palm Springs Art Museum! This was my first time visiting the museum and I was really impressed by the variety of art and the friendly staff. The museum was definitely very cool, both figuratively and literally, because they had air conditioning and I would highly recommend a visit if you are visiting Palm Springs!

My Palm Springs' Dress

When I saw this maxi tunic dress, it simply screamed "Palm Springs!" to me. Between the kaftan stye and the modern print, this dress would definitely feel right at home in Palm Springs. I even had images of wearing it poolside by a mid-century modern house with the desert in the background! While I love going to Palm Springs because it makes for a short day trip from Los Angeles and there's so much to see, it's just too hot this time of the year to go. This is especially true this summer because, due to the pandemic, most activities have to be done outdoors, thus forcing you to be out in the unbearable heat. The idea of hiking around sightseeing or even eating outdoors in 110+ degree heat just didn't sound very appealing, so I found another place to wear this dress. Although, to be honest, this gorgeous wall of bougainvillea looks like it could be right out of Palm Springs!

Once the temperatures cool down a bit in Palm Springs this fall, I will probably venture back for a short trip. It's good to know that this dress will be ready when that time comes! Even though we have visited Palm Springs a number of times, I still have a small list of places that I would like to visit in the area on my next trip there. So, between the promise of checking those things off of my list and taking an epic Palm Springs photo shoot of me wearing this dress around town, I have lots of reasons to get back there...hopefully sooner than later!

Prehistoric Fashion

When I was a child, I loved dinosaurs! Who didn't? While the brontosaurus was my favorite, there's a special place in my heart for this gigantic T-Rex located in the city of Cabazon, which is on the way to Palm Springs. Pretty much every time we pass these fun roadside dinosaurs, I have to stop. So do a lot of other people because it's always jammed with people who are also trying to get their picture with this T-Rex! Over winter break, my husband and I were in this area, so I had to return to get a few more pictures, this time wearing my new rugby striped sweater and some wild leopard pants for this wild adventure!

After we stopped to snap a few pics with the dinosaurs, we went to the outlets in Cabazon because that's the other thing the city is known for. The Cabazon outlets offer a first rate shopping experience with a lot of designers, such as Gucci, Fendi and Burberry. I was actually very good and didn't buy anything at the outlet but it was really fun looking through all of the designer goodies! Shopping was almost like feeling like a kid again, looking at these dinosaurs!

A Sea of Cacti

For those of you who have been following my blog for a while, you might know that I have a very, very long list of things that I want to see in and around the Los Angeles area. Trekking out to Palm Springs to see Moorten's Botanical Garden has been at the top of that list for quite some time and last weekend I was able to check it off! While the garden isn't very big, it is jam packed with cacti from different regions (over 3,000 to be more specific!), which makes it well worth the visit!

As always, I dressed to match the occasion, which included wearing my Doops Designs cactus skirt. (What else would one wear to visit a cactus garden?) I also wore my new satin turban knot headband with this outfit. I thought it would be the perfect accessory for spending some time exploring palm springs because it seems very retro and chic! I like to think that I brought some color to these botanical gardens with this ensemble!

One of the most stunning parts of the garden, not to mention the most Instagramable, is the greenhouse. The greenhouse is where many rare and unique species of cacti are housed. While it makes for some lovely pictures, I would offer a word of warning: the greenhouse is very tight and if you're not careful you just might end up with cactus needles somewhere you don't want them, so watch out! Overall, a visit to Moorten's Garden is well worth the risk of getting pricked by a cactus, so I would highly recommend dropping in for a visit if you're in the Palm Springs area!
