SoCal Corgi Beach Day

The picture below might look like I am just spending a hot summer day relaxing on the beach, but look a little closer. The throngs of people behind me are not just random beach goers: they are actually the SoCal Corgi Nation organization assembling for the Summer 2015 Corgi Beach Day, a seasonal event for owners of Corgis to congregate, socialize, and take lots and lots of social media pictures. Do I own a Corgi? No, I am just a Corgi stalker. As my frequent readers might already know, I have an English Springer Spaniel, but the thing is clubs and events like this don't exist for Springers Spaniels because they are crazy and very high strung. In fact, if hundreds of Springers got together in one place like this, it would be complete and utter chaos.

The one thing I really like about owners of Corgis, aside from the adorable pics they take of their dogs on Instagram, is that they somehow find a way to incorporate the word "Corgi" into other words. For example the "Corglebrities" of Instagram instead of celebrities, or "Corgtastic" instead of fantastic. So I am going to try my hand at it by saying I got a "Corgover" instead of a makeover. Above is how I came to Corgi Beach day and below is how I left.

Sure, I had to stand in line for a half an hour to get this tee shirt, but it was well worth it. In case you are not familiar with the Long Beach area where the event was held, the shirt depicts a line of Corgis around the retired ship, the Queen Mary. I've blogged a couple times about the Queen Mary here and here, so as you can see it is a favorite spot. Since Queen Elizabeth has said that the Queen Mary ship was one of the only places she could relax, it's only fitting that Queen Elizabeth's favorite dog, the Corgi, be pictured side by side with the ship.

I learned a lot about Corgis by observing them during SoCal Corgi Beach day. Sure, they are super cute with their little stumpy legs and fluffy posteriors, but there is so much more to the breed! Through photos, let me share a few of the things I discovered.

First, Corgis like Go Pro cameras so that everyone can get a Corgi's eye view of what's going on.

Next, Corgis like to dress for the occasion. If they are at the beach, why not don a Hawaiian shirt and some sunglasses? I think this particular dog might be named Mr. Pickles. That's the other thing about Corgis: they all have adorable names. I also ran into a Mr. Jay Gatsby Corgi, but unfortunately he didn't have on a pink suit, nor was he driving a yellow Rolls Royce.

More Corgis in Hawaiian shirts. Where do you buy these?

Despite their small stature, Corgis can be fierce, as the picture above depicts. This was in the line to get "merch". Perhaps they were fighting over the last Corgi-sized tee shirt?

Speaking of Corgi-sized tee shirts, it looks like this one did score the last one. We are twins!

For the most part, though, Corgis do play well with others, or at least certainly better than my dog, although they do seem a little uncomfortable in the water.

Although this one, a Corgi-Shark, does looks like he's ready for a swim. Apparently he watched the Sharknado marathon this week.

Last but not least, Corgis are good companions for sitting in the sidecar of your motorcycle. This Corgi definitely looks like he's ready for a ride!

The next Corgi beach day is October 24, 2015 in Huntington Beach. Apparently Katy Perry was at the Spring Corgi beach day this year. So if you want to see all these Corgis (800+ to be exact) and possibly a celebrity or two, mark the date on your calender!
