Miss Lonleyhearts

The abundant hearts on the J. Crew silk boy shirt in heartthrob reminds me of one of my favorite novels, Miss Lonelyhearts by Nathanael West. Set during the Great Depression in New York City, Miss Lonelyhearts is a dark comedy about a male newspaper columnist who is assigned the humiliating task of giving advice to readers' questions about relationships and love. Throughout the novel the protagonist is referred to solely by the emasculating title of "Miss Lonelyhearts" which adds to some of the comedy of this rather tragic story. I won't go into anymore details, but I highly recommend this novel, although it is a rather strange tale to say the least.

In the picture below I am holding one of my copies of Miss Lonelyhearts. I purchased it not too long ago at a used bookstore. When the clerk saw that I was buying a biography on its author, Nathanael West, he found this copy of the book for me which he thought I might like due to its rounded edges and unique shape. Well, I did like it and it was only a buck, so I brought it home to add to my growing library of books.

With my heartthrob blouse I have a whole lot of J. Crew going on since I "heart" J. Crew. The skirt is the sterling skirt in sheer mint, which I find to be a nice alternative to the J. Crew no. 2 pencil skirt. I like the detail of the pockets and the fit of this particular style. My belt and sweater are also from J. Crew. In fact the only think that is not from J. Crew (aside from the book) are the shoes which are from Miu Miu. I thought the shoes had sort of a 50's vibe that went along thematically with the rest of the outfit.
