La Jolla on My Mind

One of my favorite things about living in Southern California is its proximity to all sorts of wonderful destinations. You can hop in the car, drive for a short while (if there isn't too much traffic!) and be in some pretty awesome vacation spots, such as Las Vegas or San Diego. Last week my husband and I took a sojourn to La Jolla, which is small, beautiful coastal town near San Diego. We made it a day trip so that we could come back and be with William (our dog) and not have to worry about putting him in the kennel, which he understandably loathes.

I wore this some what nautical-inspired dress from Milly for Kohl's because I thought it would fit in perfectly with the beachy atmosphere. It ended up being a hit with the locals because a couple people actually stopped me to ask about it.

My favorite thing to do when I come to La Jolla is have drinks and dinner at the historic La Valencia hotel. The hotel was built in the 1920s and you definitely get a sense of that decade as you step through its doors.

The inside of the building has a distinctly Spanish and Moroccan flavor. The most striking feature is the large picture window showcasing the lovely Pacific Ocean. My husband and I have watched a number of sunsets from this window while drinking Mojitos, which is always a treat!

Another thing I love about the city of La Jolla is their contemporary art museum. On this trip we didn't visit the museum, but you can find traces of contemporary art lingering throughout the streets, as seen below. My favorite is the William Wegman photo of one of his Weimaraners peeking through the side of the building.

Last of all there are the sea lions! I love animals, and sea lions always remind me of dogs with their big soulful eyes and goofy personalities. If you look closely below you can see some of these playful creatures basking on the rocks along the coast of La Jolla. Some people decided to get up and personal with the sea lions; I would have done the same, but I am pretty sure that it is illegal, plus I didn't want them to mess up my Prada bag!

Thank you for strolling along with me on this short photographic sojourn to La Jolla. It truly is one of my favorite cities and if you're ever in the San Diego area, it's a perfect place to dine, drink, look at art or gaze at sea lions!
