Weekend Wanderings: Little Corona Beach

I've always been fascinated by marine life. I even went to a marine biology summer camp in Maine my freshman year of high school. (I know, very dorky!) Well, given my love of the sea and sea creatures, it's no surprise that one of the things on my "to do list" was to visit one of the many beaches here in Southern California that feature tide pools. I read an article this winter about various tide pools to visit in the area and with so many to choose from I didn't know where to start!

After seeing some pictures of the Corona del Mar Beach tide pools, I was intrigued by their other worldly beauty that's caused by the unusual rock formations. So during low tide, I decided to check them out. Technically, this is part of Corona del Mar Beach is known as Little Corona Beach, as there is a bigger beach nearby for surfing. Below you will see some of the photos from my adventures to this beautiful beach.

The weather last Saturday was rainy and overcast, which made for some very atmospheric photographs of the beach and tide pools. There was not a plethora of the marine life to be seen in the area, but I did see numerous sea anemones, crabs, small fish and sea hares, which are basically big sea slugs. I was disappointed that I didn't see any starfish or sea urchins, but maybe next time I will. Apparently winter is the best time to visit the tide pools, so I'll have to visit next year to see if I can find more interesting sea creatures in the tide pools.

In the middle of the above photo is one of the aforementioned sea hares. There was one tidal pool where they all seemed to be congregating. One kid was picking them up, which, as you can see from the sign I posted above, is a big no no!

I hope you enjoyed my photos depicting the beauty of Little Corona Beach. It's a wonderful experience and a great hidden gem of California to explore. I am also interested in checking out some of the other beaches that are home to tide pools here in Southern California. A great article about the best tide pools that this part of the state has to offer can be found here. Once you visit one tide pool, it becomes pretty addicting!
