Urban Safari

Guns and Roses once compared the city of Los Angeles to a jungle and then said, "You're in the jungle baby, you're gonna die!" It's probably not something you want to hear if you are just moving to the city. On my most recent trip to Downtown Los Angeles, or DTLA as it's referred to by hipsters, I kind of felt like I was in the jungle for a lot of reasons. First and foremost, the print on my skirt depicts a jungle scene. And then there's my safari-esque hat. Second, there is an abundance of greenery behind me, which is a rarity for downtown; I suppose it gives a jungle-like effect, even though these photos were taken in front of the California Club.

To get back to the Guns and Roses song, L.A. is also a jungle in the more metaphorical sense. Compared to my time spent in New York, L.A. seems like a city that could definitely eat you alive. After all, there's a reason why noir literature and films are situated primarily in Los Angeles. Despite the fact that there is a downtown, Los Angeles is mostly a sprawling suburb full of seemingly hundreds of neighborhoods. It really can have an alienating effect. There is a wide discrepancy between the haves and the have nots, which you can find around any block of the city. And then there are the innumerable people who come here every year with the illusive hope of fame and fortune that seem just out of reach. It really is a unique city for so many reasons.

    1. I am definitely a city girl too, but I actually find L.A. to be much more confusing and overwhelming than New York, where I lived for several years. Thanks for hosting and I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!
