Two Faced: My Watch Story

Like most bloggers, I get the occasional email from companies who want me to promote their company in some capacity. Usually I turn a blind eye to these because the products never seem to interest me and it always feels like I am doing a bunch of work just to post an ad for a company with nothing in it for me! This was not the case, however, when Invaluable, an online action house, contacted me about sharing my watch story. Watches are something that I have been fascinated with since I was little. Watches were also one of the things that my husband and I bonded over when we first started dating. So the idea of celebrating watches and sharing a watch story definitely appealed to me. Plus this story has a bit of a romantic twist to it, so it's perfect for Valentine's Day!

The watch I am wearing with today's outfit is my Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Duetto Duo. Never heard of the brand? Neither had I until I met my husband. It's a definitely an "under the radar" brand, although it was briefly mentioned in the movie Bad Teacher when Cameron Diaz, who plays a gold digging teacher, spies a Jaeger-LeCoultre on the wrist of a substitute teacher played by Justin Timberlake. Timberlake's character reveals that he is the heir to the Jaeger-LeCoultre family fortune, hence his pricey watch, and so the bad teacher's pursuit of him ensues. But as usual, I digress.

My watch is called a Reverso Duo because it can be flipped and it has two faces: one is rectangular with guilloche and a full set of Arabic numerals and blued sword hands for day while the other has diamonds and a round mother of pearl dial with gold spearhead hands for night. It's really a practical watch because for casual wear you can sport the plainer side and when you are a bit more dressed up you can switch to the "bling" side with diamonds on the back. I'd like to think that the watch is a little like my personality and style. In one respect I can be very understated and quiet and then there are times that I can be loud, bold and when it comes to my wardrobe, a tad flashy!

I was given this watch by my husband for my 25th birthday while we were dating. The thing is, there was a present that came before it that made me question for a second just how well my husband actually knew me and my style. The watch below was the first thing that my husband had me open.

While this J. LO brand watch is my favorite color (purple) and does have "diamonds" (crystals), it is not really my style and I am not the biggest JLO/Jennifer Lopez fan.  I wasn't sure what to make of the gift or the fact that my now husband thought that this was something that I would enjoy wearing.

When my husband asked if I liked it, I said, "Thank you" and avoided directly answering the question, because I'm a terrible liar. When he asked if I would wear it to tea at the Huntington Library the next day, I said, "Sure, okay" and hesitantly agreed, but protested that the color might not exactly match what I was going to wear.

Then I looked at the $85 price tag and couldn't believe that my husband, who I knew at the time despised fashion watches, would pay retail for a watch like this. (I later found out it cost about$10) The whole thing was boggling my mind to be quite honest. After taking the watch out of the box, placing it on my wrist and persuading me to wear it out to celebrate, I was convinced that this was no gag, and this watch was the essence of how my husband saw me as a person, which was a little scary.

It was only after about 15-20 minutes of taunting that he brought out the real deal, which was my Jaeger-LeCoultre. I wasn't really expecting such a lavish gift either, so between the shock of the gag gift and the shock of my new beautiful Jaeger-LeCoultre, I wasn't quite sure what to do.

I guess the point is, when I wear my watch on a day like today, I think of my birthday and this silly story, and how much I love my husband. It's wonderful to have a nice little reminder like that on your wrist. (To this day I haven't worn the J. LO watch, even though I did promise my husband I would wear it at least once in public!)
